A Memory of Empire

When reality breaks, where do you run?

It was not something Jessica ever considered. All she wanted was to be left alone. Alone with her studies, alone with her books, and alone in her Paris. Not shuffled away to live with an uncle she hardly knew, and an aunt she had never met.

It all seemed so terribly unfair.

But when reality breaks and past and future blur, where do you run?
Cast adrift in a maddening maze of politics and lies, assassins and fanatics, getting lost in the multiverse and its many island universes was not exactly what she had in mind for a peaceful life.

But fate is fickle at best, and running for her life through the dark corridors of galactic power, Jessica struggles to lead a ragtag family of misfits beyond the ghosts of a broken empire, and the machinations of those intent on using her to revive it.

Set in a dark dystopian future, or is it the past, “A Memory of Empire” follows the struggles of a young women forced to navigate the mistakes of a fallen empire, what it means to be human, and the seductive lure of power.

For readers of Frank Herbert, Iain M. Banks, Robert Jordan, and many more, The Never-Verse and its companion series “Queen of Ravens” masterfully bridges the gap between pure fantasy and science fiction.

Follow Jessica in a gripping adventure through colorful worlds where reality grows thin and the fantastical becomes a  nightmare.

BOOK 1

The Great Game

“It seems to me this world is full of monsters with the faces of angels,
and angels that seem monsters full of scars.
One will seduce you with sweet words, and the other will frighten you with the truth.”

The Middle Kingdoms are truly ancient, rotten at heart, and coming apart under their own weight and misrule. For the ambitious, Shăr and the Western Empire are ripe for the picking. Ever the master of the Great Game, Ema, the Countess of Oshelila, seeks to guide its fall to her own ends. Zirana, the last true heir to the house of Mengia, is no one’s pawn. Surrounded by fools and flatterers, assassins, and power-hungry nobles, she must fight not only her uncle the Emperor and his court, but the mistakes of her mother and the ambitions of her aunt Ema to snatch the crown.

Sheltered from the shifts in power driving the Empire to conflict, Atia differs little from other court women with her desire for a House Throne. All she needs is the interest of one of the most eligible men at court, no matter the cost. With the great cities of Kăr or Oshelila, her reward, the last thing she needs is an upstart provincial girl disrupting her games. A dagger in the back or poison in their tea, neither matters to remove her rivals. After all, such power and wealth is more than worth killing for, no matter the Countess of Oshelila’s plans.

But nothing is ever assured in the great game of house, and in Shăr, one plays the great game or another will for you, with no mercy for the loser. Only a slow walk to the scaffold, a jeering crowd, and a headsman’s axe or rope.

Combining fantasy with science fiction, “Queen of Ravens” spirits the reader away on a journey through the dark corridors of power, religious fanaticism, betrayal, and revenge, seen through the lives of those who would control all to their own ends. For readers of Robert Jordan, Tad Williams, Joe Abercrombie, and Mark Lawrence, “Queen of Ravens” will immerse you in a richly garnished world, where not even one’s own family can be trusted and the ghost of an even older empire threaten to consume them all.
